Three new information signs have been set up at Mount Esja to help prevent accidents on the mountain. The information signs will give good advice on safe climbing in the mountain and what to consider depending on the season. Mount Esja is kind of Reykjavik’s signature landmark, a beautiful mountain opposite Reykjavik on the other side of Kollafjördur and it has long been a popular spot of the locals for hiking but it’s also a treacherous one for the uninitiated when weather conditions change. In an announcement from Icelandic Landsbjörg search and rescue team, it is stated that while Esja is a popular area for outdoor recreation, many people underestimate the mountain’s dangerous side during winter. Thus people used to hike or jog up the mountain in the summer may underestimate the danger as winter arrives with sudden and severe changes in conditions. This is when Esja changes into a mountain where you need avalanche equipment, ice picks and spiked mountaineering boots if you are going further up than just the lowest part. Esja is the mountain that has claimed the most lives of any mountain in Iceland and only last year a teenage boy died there.
